Every morning I get up and before I exit my cell I do three things: I brush my teeth, brush my hair, and shave. Every once in a while I even get dressed. Sounds normal…for a man. Problem is, I’m a woman.

When I was a pre-teen I couldn’t wait to grow facial hair, it was the ultimate sign of masculinity and I could hide behind that, I literal mask. Nobody could question you’re a boy when you have a mustache and beard. I wore that stupid thing until I was in my thirties for precisely the same reason. Silly when I reflect on it now, but it was so important to me then.

Now I spend the few minutes every morning, and sometimes I do it later in the evening too, shaving my mask and showing as much of the beautiful woman underneath as possible. I hate the process and now I pluck the upper lip with tweezers every morning.

I love the fact that I finally get to drop the nonsense and just be me, no fluff, no masks, nothing left to hide from, I get to live.

But, yeah, until I get out and can afford electrolysis… I’m a chick who shaves.
