Releasing from prison is difficult. Compound that with cultural factors like race, gender, being transgender, and sex offenses and release becomes infinitely more difficult. My girlfriend, a transwoman of color with a sex offense, has been out since last year and still does not have housing. She makes great money for someone just released, hasn’t violated, been on point with every requirement and she can’t find a place to save her life. In fact, her parole officers suggested remedy?

Move to another county. Basically, get on someone else’s caseload.

What’s happening is parole officers’ jobs are getting more and more challenging as people are facing challenges like housing. What do you tell someone who makes great money, has a serious drive, does all the right things, but cannot find anyone to take her money? The eviction moratorium has helped some, but for others…well, you get the point.

I don’t know what the solution is. What I do know is that in 4 months I’m leaving prison and no matter what, I’m going to make it. Period.

My, what a problem to have.

With Love
