I made a commitment that when a book is sent to me, I will read it and then write about it. I recently received a copy of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous and read it over night. I started on a Friday evening and finished it Saturday afternoon.
In this story the main character, Little Dog, writes a letter to his mother. Retelling the experiences of his life as an immigrant in the US and how his relationship with her was, at times, downright abusive. It’s raw and unfiltered, which I appreciate.
As a major fan of nonfiction I am delighted by directness and even cold truth. The author kept me enthralled by his ability to make me confront harshness and beauty in the same experience and often in the same person.
I reflected on my own life constantly throughout this book and at times could see myself within its pages.
Very glad it was sent to me.
