Do You Have To Know War To Seek Peace?

I know many men in prison, and women, who are seeking the Buddhist way. All of them have known great tragedy. All of them have unleashed tragedy. All of them have embraced the idea of nonviolence through Buddhism.

It got me thinking why Buddhism is the major theme that binds these folks together and then it dawned on me, judgment. Unlike Christianity or Islamic views, Buddhism offers religion equally and nonviolently. No war.

While I'm not a Buddhist personally, many LGBT people are. No judgment, no violence, just peaceful ceremonies and quiet low-toned instruction. Sounds wonderful.

However, do we need to know great war to seek great peace? Must we feel tragedy to know what love feels like? Must we understand failure and regret and shame to grasp accomplishment, happiness, and confidence?

If this is the case, and I believe it is, then people in prison are best equipped to be peacemakers and harbingers of love.

Food for thought on my end.
